Telephone History: Ravenna

Welcome to Telephone History: a segment where I try to retell facts that I've learned about Italy on field trips, in class etc. *Much like a game of telephone, accuracy may vary.* In this episode, we'll be taking a look at Ravenna, a quaint town in North East Italy that's famous for its early Christian mosaics. Only two and a half hours away by car (and I think even less by train), Ravenna makes a great day trip to do from Florence. Early Christian churches were usually pretty bland on the outside, but had lavish mosaic decorations coating the entire inside. Each square of glass in a mosaic is called a "tesserae."
